Welcome to Coast to Coast to H2O dot com.

Forget the cannonball run, nevermind the gumball, you've never seen anything like Coast to Coast to H2O! (in 3D)

Come one, come all! (So long as you drive a mk1, of course.)

We'll be driving from the west coast to the east coast, collecting as many Mk1 drivers as we can, along the way.

If you were thinking of going to H2O International 2011,
quit thinking about it, and just do it!

Do you think Burt Reynolds would've ever gotten anywhere if he had just sat around thinking about it?

The simple answer is No. So grab your keys and grow yourself a mustache, 'cause we're going drivin'!

Our ever-growing crew of MK1-misfits will be embarking on the world's craziest adventure. If you drive a MK1 and you're looking for a good time (not the kind scribbled on a bathroom wall) come with us for the adventure of a lifetime!

You're guaranteed to have a blast. I'm pretty sure it'll bust your crank and leave skidmarks on your soul.... just sayin'...

About C2CtoH2O

Welcome to The 152's Coast To Coast H2o Road Trip site!  Hello

What, you've never heard of it? Shrugs Perhaps an explanation is in order. Think

Lucky McGee and Sparky started a yearly tradition in 2007, of driving across The United States, to Ocean City, Maryland to attend the H2o International VW show. Well, if you wanna get technical, their first cross-country trip was to Waterfest, in New Jersey, but this site pertains to the H2o International trip. Smooove

Regardless, they've made 6 trips across The United States, all in Mk1s. DubLove

In 2008, someone else finally got off their ass and committed to make the trip with them. There's been a lot of "Ya, sure, I'll make it." "I'm comin' for sure!" "I'll be there." and a dash of "I'll see of I can make it." with little, to no follow-through. Sparky Eyeroll

It was a refreshing change when RJ drove all the way down from Alberta to make the trip with us. The old saying "The more, the merrier" certainly rings true in this situation. More cars means more fun, and everyone had a blast. We made memories and friendships to last a lifetime. Pals

Another thing we discovered is that with more people, and more Mk1s, there's more spare parts, knowledge, and helping hands to go around. There's also more ideas for fun stops and more cameras, to capture the fun on film...er... I mean, memory stick. Smooove

In 2009, We had a couple very special road-trippers who actually flew over to the United States from Norway/Germany, in order to make the trip with us! Sadly, they couldn't bring their Mk1s, and unfortunately, due to a family emergency, Lucky and I were unable to make the trip ourselves, but both Otti and Tuki still made The Big Adventure!

I'd like to take this moment to step out of third-person character, if you don't mind. Tips Hat

We love Mk1s, we love road trips. We enjoy fun, driving, shenanigans, mischief, and general tomfoolery. We're currently recruiting more like-minded Mk1 drivers to make the cross-country trip with us, in 2011.

Our travels, and recent addition to the cross country club (that'd be RJ, if you didn't follow) have attracted all kinds of attention. We have more people interested in traveling with us than ever before, which is why we created this site. Without an organized plan, nothing will ever happen. Which is why we're starting plans, and this site, almost a year in advance. Winking

As usual, we've gained a lot of attention, and have a lot of friends interested in making the trip. Myself, The lovely Lucky McGee, and our favorite Canadian, RJ, will be making the trip, for sure. ThumbsUp

Some new and old friends have showed interest, and some have made (not very convincing) commitments to make the trip. If you'd be interested in a wild, cross country mk1 rally, feel free to sign up.  Thumbs up

Accomodations & Expenses

You will be responsible for your own fuel, accommodations, drinks, smokes, foods, and repairs.
Any combined accommodation arrangements should be made between respective parties.
The 4 major areas of expense are fuel, hotels, food and drinks, and of course entertainment.

  • Fuel
You might be surprised at how inexpensive the trip fuel costs will be. MK1's get some incredible
fuel mileage. Use the Trip Calculator to get an estimate of what your fuel costs would be.

  • Hotels
You will be responsible for your own hotel accomodations. However, there are already several people committed to the trip, and unless you snore loudly, or smell badly, or are otherwise unbearable to live with, some people might be willing to share rooms and split the costs, making it more affordable for all parties involved. For further discussions concerning such arrangements click here.

If you are allergic to other people, or simply do not want to share a room with anybody, just to give you some idea of what kind of cost hotels will be, on the last 2 trips to H2O, we were able to get hotels for an average cost of around $50 a night. (This does not include the stay in Ocean City.)

In our 30,000 miles of road tripping, we've figured out where to stay at the best rates. Days Inn has won the Most Economical trophy every time, so we try to make our stops in cities where a Days Inn is available.

In Ocean City, we always stay at the Francis Scott Key Resort, because in addition to the nice ammenities they offer, they also have really great rates, and it's a pretty nice and mellow atmosphere.

  • Food
While on the road, we try to stop for at least one real meal a day. The other 2 meals we generally just drive through a fast food establishment, or grab something quick from the fuel station when we fuel up, so in addition to saving money, we don't waste an hour or two of driving time for every meal.

Random Fact: We learned on our first trip to H2O International in 2007, that it *is* in fact possible to survive on nothing but coffee, cocktails, and dollar double cheeseburgers from McDonalds for three weeks straight.

  • Entertainment
While we don't usually stop at too many tourist traps, since we're on vacation during the trip, we do tend to go out at every opportunity. And even with going out as frequently as we do, our entertainment tab usually only runs a few hundred dollars for the entire trip for two of us.

So you may be thinking, "I'd like to go, but I can't afford it.", and maybe you can't... but before you write off the idea, calculate the estimated cost of the trip, then consider the fun you would have.

If you weigh them out objectively, maybe you could be inspired to give up a latte a day, (or whatever your vice happens to be), and put the money you would have spent on that one cup of coffee into your piggy bank, and by the time next September rolls around, you'll have a nice chunk of change to go road trippin' with.
